Will Invisalign Straighten My Teeth?

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

The Invisalign treatment consists of a series of aligners that are changed approximately every two weeks. Each aligner is custom made to gradually move your teeth into place. The advantages of Invisalign are many. They are clear, so hardly noticeable. They are removable for good oral hygiene so you can brush and floss normally. You can also eat what you want because the Aligners are removable.

But Invisalign won’t solve every malocclusion (bad bite). You need to have a careful examination and diagnosis before we can tell you whether Invisalign will straighten your teeth. Come to our Long Island dental office and we’ll tell you if Invisalign is right for you!

Women in Dental History

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

Dr. Lucy Hobbs Taylor was the first woman dentist in the USA. She was born in NY in 1833 at a time when women were not welcome in the workplace or in the dental profession. In 1859 she applied to medical school but was rejected because of her sex. She applied to the Ohio College of Dental Surgery and although she was rejected again, she convinced the college dean to tutor her privately. In 1861 she opened a dental practice, and she finally earned her doctorate in dentistry in 1866. “Dr. Lucy” developed a successful practice and she was well known.
By the end of the 19th century, nearly 1,000 women had joined the dental profession – Lucy Hobbs Taylor was the trail blazer. Today half of all dental students are women, and women make up a significant percentage of practicing dentists.download groundhog day divx

Whoopi’s Confession: I’m Going to Lose My Teeth

Monday, April 20th, 2009

Whoopi Goldberg recently returned to the TV show The View after undergoing emergency gum surgery. She spoke candidly and emotionally about her dental health. The YouTube link can be found on my website at: http://www.drterryshapiro.com/peri.html.

Whoopi said in part: “Take care of your teeth. I am embarrassed to say this to people. I have great dental insurance and I did nothing with it. For years and years I let my mouth go and I am paying the price. I am losing teeth because I am losing bone and I brought this on myself because I could have prevented it. Your mouth is connected to your entire system, your immune system. If you do not take care of your mouth, you are not taking care of your body and it will kill you. … They finally linked mouth health to heart health. Dentistry has changed so much. I’m begging you - save your own life. Don’t do what I’ve done. I’m going to lose my teeth.”

Thank you, Whoopi. I hope the public is listening.

Pull them all - don’t do it!!

Saturday, April 18th, 2009

David came into my East Setauket, Long Island dental office today and insisted that we take out all of his few remaining teeth. “Pull them all out – I don’t want any more tooth problems!” he said. But don’t do it!!! You will regret it. We always try to save any teeth that we can. Even if the tooth has a limited life expectancy, it is better to keep it as long as you can then to have it extracted. If you think you have problems with your teeth, just wait until you have denture problems.

Even the best dentures – or implant dentures – are not like having your own teeth. Even in the worst of situations we can often salvage the lower front teeth or at least the lower canines so we can use the teeth for a partial denture clasp. This is so much better than a full lower denture. You can be sure that I always discuss all of the pros and cons of “pulling them all” for my Long Island patients before I consider extractions.

Dog Eats Dentures; Dog Eats Teeth Whitening Trays

Monday, April 13th, 2009

Two dog stories heard in our dental office today:

Patient number one was sitting at her home computer, got tired wearing her denture, took it out and laid it on the table. The dog jumped up and ran off with it. Time for a new denture!

Patient number two wrapped her tooth whitening trays in a napkin, left them on the kitchen table, up jumped the dog – and you know the rest. Fortunately she saved the stone models of her teeth so we were able to easily make new bleaching trays.

We always give our Long Island dental patients a box in which to store their dental appliances – please be sure to use it. Never wrap a dental appliance in a napkin!

The Economy and Your Teeth

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

Time Magazine ran an article recently about the effect of the economy on dentistry. According to their study, the recession has resulted in an increase in the numbers of people seeking dental treatment. People are stressed about money and jobs; they grind their teeth and need to have the resulting fractures repaired. Another reason people seek dental treatment during a recession is that people indulge in unhealthy comfort foods to take their minds off of their economic woes. A comfort, yes - but cavities producing and thus the need for the dentist.

Another reason for the increase in dental visits is that people want to look their best when out job hunting so they may elect to have tooth whitening or cosmetic dentistry done. People may also be afraid of losing their dental insurance benefits so they make appointments to have any needed work done before their benefits run out. When times are bad, people may also skip their regular dental examinations and cleanings – and find out later that the delay cost them a root canal or crown. According to Time Magazine, “In tough times, one of the best investments you can make is in your teeth. These days, that’s very good news for dentists.” I might add that healthy teeth and gums are always a good investment for the patient.

Ice Chewing Habits and Your Teeth

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

When new patients come to my Long Island Dental office for dental treatment I begin with inviting them to sit down with me so we can get to know each other. I like to learn about them and what their concerns are before I do an examination. And of course we discuss our findings and review options and fees before beginning any treatment. The other day a healthy looking man in his middle fifties came into the office, said he hadn’t been to the dentist for 4-5 years but had never had a filling and didn’t have any problems. Nothing was hurting him, had no bleeding or swelling of the gums. But he mentioned just in passing that he had a habit of chewing ice.

A red light went on inside of my head! Chewing ice puts enormous pressure on the teeth plus the added stress of the cold on the enamel can cause the teeth to fracture. The fracture begins with micro-fractures that become deeper as the years go by and the ice chewing continue. The ice acts as a wedge pushing the teeth apart, and the teeth can break in half. Yes, I have seen this happen. Plus I could see from a foot away that his teeth were worn smooth and had shortened. I warned him away from his ice chewing habit!!! Sure enough, when I did my examination I found several cracks in his molar teeth and flattened incisal edges on his front teeth. The back teeth will need crowns to protect the remaining tooth structure and to prevent further cracking. The front teeth will need an occlusal guard to prevent grinding. Check out my webpage on occlusal guards to learn more and to see a photo of worn teeth.spartan dvd
