SmileHigh

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

I just read about a dentist, Dr. Julian Haszard, who is passionate about mountain climbing as well as about helping people to achieve dental health. Sound familiar? I also enjoy the mountains, but for me, 4,000 feet will do fine rather than the 14,000 feet he climbs!

Dr. Haszard formed a dental aid charity called SmileHigh to service Nepalese children. Because of a radical change in diet, especially a huge increase in refined sugar, there is enormous dental decay among Nepalese children, especially among those of remote communities that have no dental services.

This summer a group of dental professionals will travel to Nepal to volunteer their dental services in conjunction with an expedition to climb Mount Manaslu. The purpose of the climb is to raise money for SmileHigh. The dentists will provide dental treatment and dental education in the Samagon region of Nepal for two weeks. Their website is www.smilehigh.net. How fabulous!free charlie s angels elephant dvdrip

The Dentist and Threevillagepeople.com

Sunday, May 24th, 2009

The Three Villages (Stony Brook, Old Field, and Setauket) is where I practice dentistry and where there is a wonderful community website called threevillage people.com. It is a place for people to search for local merchants and professionals, including physicians, chiropractors, and dentists.

I have a page on this website so it is another way for people to find out about my dental services. I was recently interviewed about how the web affects dentists and their dental practices. The interview can be found on

More on Joe Biden’s Teeth

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

After writing my blog entry yesterday about Vice President Joseph Biden’s teeth, I Googled “Joe Biden teeth” and up came a website: http://joebidensteeth.com/. I kid you not! There is also a very funny (funny to dentists anyway) YouTube video about Joe Biden’s teeth at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MN5RLFchZGA.

In case you are wondering, it looks to me like the Vice President has had a full mouth reconstruction, consisting of porcelain crowns covering all of his existing teeth and bridges to replace any missing teeth. But the crowns are too white, too opaque, and too long and bulky for him. I would have done much better dentistry so that the teeth looked natural and were appropriate to his face. Crowns and bridges should look like real teeth. Unfortunately his look fake. Check out my Before and After Photos and Crowns and Bridges pages on this website and you’ll see some beautiful dentistry that I did at my East Setauket dental office.download between strangers movie life of brian download free rear window dvd bratz genie magic download free download knock off dvdrip

Joe Biden’s Teeth

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

When asked about his propensity for gaffes, Vice President Joseph Biden told Brian Williams of NBC TV, “I’m too long of tooth to change who I am.” Did he really mean this? Does the VP have periodontal disease? Or was he just being metaphorical? If he has gum disease, maybe he’ll come out publicly like Whoopi Goldberg did recently (see my blog entry of May 17, 2009). He could tell us how he neglected his dental health until it was too late and how gum disease destroyed his teeth’s supporting tissues.

If people were thereby motivated to seek professional care, what a benefit to the nation’s dental health that would be! (Long of tooth refers to the length of the tooth as the gums recede and more of the tooth’s root is exposed.) If you notice any change in your gums or teeth (bleeding, swelling, odor, tooth movement, change in bite) contact our Long Island Dental office and we’ll do a periodontal evaluation of your teeth and supporting structures.charlie s angels download

Family Dentist: Bread, Teeth and Gums

Friday, May 8th, 2009

Patients who come to my Long Island Family Dental Practice are often greeted with the wonderful smell of freshly baked bread. That’s because I love to bake - and eat - freshly baked bread. Usually I bake with whole grains – best for the teeth and gums – but have been known to make special treats like my Orange-Hazelnut Chocolate Bread. This recipe comes from the cookbook, Kneadlessy Simple, by Nancy Baggett. I have been busy making delicious no-knead yeast breads from this fabulous new cookbook. You’ll find some of Nancy’s bread recipes on her website at http://www. kitchenlane.com. or treat yourself to the book!

So stop by our family dental office for that great bread aroma and a slice of delicious whole grain bread!

Career Day: Dentistry as a Career

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

Last week I participated in Career Day at the Nassequegue Elementary School, near my East Setauket Dental Office. I spoke to third to sixth graders about Dentistry as a career. I explained how to become a dentist and what my work is like. I talked about the technological advances in dentistry and about the uses of computing and photography.

They were very attentive and asked excellent questions. I was impressed by their knowledge; they knew about palatal expanders and athletic guards! I told them that they didn’t have to go to dental school, that they sounded like they were already dentists! I asked them how to keep their teeth healthy and they quickly responded: brush after meals, eat healthy foods, and visit the dentist twice a year.fish called wanda a download

Sports Drinks and Tooth Erosion

Friday, May 1st, 2009

Sports drinks may be great for an energy boost but they also expose people to levels of citric acid that can cause tooth erosion and hypersensitivity. Tooth wear affects an estimated one in 15 Americans. Brushing your teeth after drinking a sports drink can compound the problem of tooth erosion because the softened enamel is very susceptible to the abrasiveness of toothpaste. The research was done at the NYU College of Dentistry. Check out the link about tooth wear on my website: http://www.drterryshapiro.com/mouthguards.html.
