Your Teeth, Bucky Beaver and Ipana Toothpaste?

Monday, June 29th, 2009

Are you old enough to remember the Ipana toothpaste ads from the 1950’s?
Well, those ads highlighted Bucky Beaver advocating that “You should brush three times a day and visit your dentist two times a year!”   Thus it was a Madison Avenue advertising executive who created the 6-month checkup!  There was no scientific basis at all for this 6 month interval.

While it’s not a bad idea to have twice yearly visits to the dentist, more frequent visits may be indicated for patients with gum disease.  Laboratory research shows that the bacteria associated with periodontal disease become more active after 90 days. If these bacteria are periodically disturbed and debrided, the tissue will show a healthy response.  At 3-months, less destruction will have taken place and the tissue will be healthier than if the patient waits six months.

We’ll be happy to see you at our East Setauket dental office and evaluate your periodontal status.

What is a Top Dentist?

Friday, June 26th, 2009

I often ask myself what makes a top dentist?  At the Pankey Institute for Advanced Dental Education I learned three important ingredients for being at the top: caring, judgment and skill.  First and foremost, a dentist needs to care about his/her patients, secondly he/she has to use good judgment to know what procedures are appropriate to perform.  Thirdly, he/she needs to have the skills to carry out the procedures.  I think about these three elements often.  I work hard at my East Setauket dental office to develop my skills and judgment, and I always care deeply about my patients.  They are like family.

Am I Missing a Tooth?

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

Check out the ads for the new comedy film “The Hangover.” What do you notice?  Right in the center of the ad is a guy who is missing a tooth (the right later incisor, to be exact).   If that photo doesn’t convince everyone to take care of their teeth, then I don’t know what will!  So I checked out the trailer.

The film is about some friends who get together for a raucous bachelor party.  The next morning they all have headaches but remember nothing of the night before. “ I lost a tooth,” says our hero, as he looks at himself in the mirror.  You’d think it would have hurt!  Well if you need a tooth extracted, it’s better to come to our Long Island dental office for the procedure, and don’t be afraid – I promise it won’t hurt!

The Carrier Pigeon: If not by beak, then by teeth

Saturday, June 20th, 2009

The funniest tooth story I have ever heard concerns my friend Claude, who is a teacher.  One day he was speaking to a parent who had to leave because she had a dentist appointment.  “Who is your dentist?” Claude asked, and he was stunned at her reply.

It turns out that the dentist was a friend of Claude’s from high school.  Claude wanted to get in touch with this old friend (mind you, this was before email, facebook, or twitter) so he wrote a note to the dentist, rolled it into a ball and asked the parent to put it in her mouth and thus deliver it to the dentist.  When the dentist told her to “open, please,” he discovered the rolled up piece of paper in her mouth.  And thus the two old friends reconnected.

Women for World Health

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

Last week I wrote about dentists volunteering their services in Nepal.  I also read recently about a fabulous organization called Women for World Health which is forming a medical mission to remote areas of Laos this fall.  The mission will include a dentist who will provide needed extractions and restorations.  Women for World Health is an organization run by women which works in poor countries to improve the lives of people through medical and educational assistance.  Their website is www.womenforworldhealth.org.

Judge Sotomayor and her Teeth

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

When I read about Supreme Court nominee Judge Sonia Sotomayor’s finances, I noticed that she owed money to her dentist. I haven’t had a good look at her teeth, but as she does have diabetes and there is a strong link between diabetes and gum disease, there is a strong possibility that she suffers from the latter. Gum disease needs to be controlled with frequent visits to the dentist for periodontal scalings. If neglected, surgery and/or tooth loss can result. This can be costly. If you suffer from diabetes, be sure to visit the dentist regularly for a periodontal examination. Healthy gums should have a firm, stippled consistency, should not be swollen or bleed or have an odor.

Smoking and Lung Cancer

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

Sadly a close friend and neighbor of mine passed away suddenly last week of pneumonia. She was a life-long smoker and it turns out that the pneumonia was a by-product of undiagnosed lung cancer. She had no symptoms - yet died of the disease. Smoking is bad for your teeth and gums – and it can kill you. There may be no warning.
