General Dentistry
Our East Setauket, Long Island office is calm and relaxed and we pamper both our adult and children patients with personal service and dental excellence.  We spend unrushed time with each patient, making sure that we understand all of your special needs and concerns.  It is very important to us that we get to know you as an individual.

Children’s Dentistry
We enjoy treating our youngest patients and do our best to make their visits comfortable and fun.  We practice minimally invasive dentistry.  We apply fluoride varnish to strengthen the tooth enamel.  We apply sealants to protect the teeth against decay.  We stress proper home care and regular examinations to set our young patients on a lifetime of oral health.

Wellness
Dr. Shapiro believes in living a healthy life style with healthy food choices, regular exercise, and avoidance of biological and environment hazards.  She carries this philosophy into her practice, using the safest dental materials and recommending alternative modalities, when warranted.  As a woman dentist, she is attuned to the particular dental needs of her women patients.

Comprehensive Examination
Your initial oral examination consists of a complete visual examination, digital radiographs, digital photographs, a cancer screening, and periodontal assessment.  At your consultation visit we will discuss treatment options so that we can help you to select the best treatment for your needs, including:

Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain veneers are thin shells of ceramic that bond directly to the front surfaces of the teeth. Placing custom porcelain veneers requires a high degree of technical skill as well as attention to cosmetic detail. We design each case individually to enhance each patient's smile.   Porcelain veneers require less tooth reduction than conventional crowns and can conservatively transform a smile.

Tooth-Colored Fillings (Dental Bonding)
Tooth-colored fillings are made of a durable resin or composite material that bonds to teeth and help to reinforce and strengthen your teeth.   Tooth-colored fillings are an alternative to the conventional amalgam or silver-mercury fillings and will repair decayed, chipped or fractured teeth.

Crowns and Bridges
Crowns, or caps, look and function just like natural teeth.  They are often the solution to restore teeth that are too decayed, cracked or broken for a filling.  Crowns cover your teeth completely and fit snugly at the gum to protect what remains of the natural teeth. Our crowns are made of the finest porcelain and are designed to precisely match the color and shape of your other teeth. Our crowns will look and feel completely natural.
Bridges replace missing teeth with a fixed, cemented prosthesis when dental implants are not an option.  We use fine porcelain and the bridge looks and functions like natural teeth.

Dental Implants
For patients missing one or more of their natural teeth, dental implants offer a secure, natural looking, and permanent solution. Unlike fixed bridges or dentures, restored dental implants most closely mimic real teeth by replacing not only the tooth, but also the root. Made out of biologically safe titanium, the dental implant is surgically placed into the bone and actually fuses with the bone in a process called osseointegration. Restored dental implants look and function exactly like natural teeth and are a very comfortable and conservative way to replace teeth and help preserve facial structure.

Teeth Whitening
Having a beautiful smile may be even easier than you think.  Our patients achieve brighter, whiter teeth with the Opalescence professional at-home tooth whitening (tooth bleaching) procedure or with the in-office tooth whitening procedure.  Tooth whitening corrects brown, yellow and mottled teeth and can bring a dull smile alive.

Periodontal Therapy – Soft Tissue Management
Soft Tissue Management is an individualized plan to eliminate infection of the gums and root surfaces.  With scaling and root planing we help eliminate infection in the pockets below the gumline. A routine prophy (cleaning) emphasizes cleaning the teeth above the gumline in a generally healthy mouth. Root planning focuses on eliminating tartar and plaque below the gum and detoxifying the root surfaces where disease occurs. Obtaining smooth root surfaces and flushing out the pockets allows for healthy reattachment of the gums to the root surfaces.  We will make recommendations to help you more effectively clean your teeth.

What do we hope to accomplish with Soft Tissue Management?
•    Gums that do not bleed. Healthy gums do not bleed.
•    Fresher breath and taste
•    Gums that are not red, swollen, or tender
•    Reduce pocket depths
•    Control of Periodontal Disease

What do we need from our patients to make this treatment a success?
•    Completion of the periodontal therapy prescribed by our office
•    Thoroughly cleaning all tooth surfaces 2 times a day
•    Maintenance of regular recare visits

Root Canal Treatment (Endodontic Therapy)
Root canal therapy is a safe and effective procedure to save abscessed and infected teeth and avoid extractions.  With our use of modern technologies of rotary instrumentation, electric motors and apex finders, we can perform root canal therapy, comfortably and often in a single visit for our patients.

Mouth Guards
We can fabricate a mouth guard for you in order to prevent injury to your teeth.   Mouth guards are essential for contact sports.  They also protect teeth from damage for patients who grind their teeth at night or during the day.  A bite guard can help reduce symptoms of Temporomandibular Joint Disease.

Removable Full and Partial Dentures
We fabricate custom full or partial removable dentures for our patients who require this service.  Old dentures will wear out or warp over time, causing the person to look older and be unable to chew foods they would like.   Dr. Shapiro can replace worn out dentures with custom-made, state-of-the-art dentures.  She was trained in the Turbyfill technique of denture construction which enables the patient to wear a trial denture for comfort, function, and aesthetics before a final denture is constructed.  This way patients get the looks and function they want.
