John Henry “Doc” Holliday was a gambler and outlaw of the Old West, who participated in the infamous 1881 Gunfight at the O.K. Corral in Arizona. But little known is that Holliday was a graduate of the Pennsylvania College of Dental Surgery. He practiced dentistry for a short time in Dallas, Texas, but he had tuberculosis and his persistent cough frightened away his patients. He began to gamble and found this to be a more profitable source of income than practicing dentistry! The Arizona Dental Association recently honored Holliday for the notoriety he brought to the profession. He was awarded an honorary membership at the Western Regional Dental Convention this year. A curious honoree to be sure!
